A Hindu ngeruwak ceremony was held at Sentral Parkir Kuta. It marked a symbolic start, not the start of tunnel construction.
Officials had announced an April 2025 arrival for tunnel boring machines. By February 2026 they had not arrived, and the Kuta site showed no construction activity.
Bali and Jakarta signed an initial cooperation agreement covering planning support, knowledge transfer, and railway operations advice. It did not fund construction.

Governor Wayan Koster said Bali would pursue a lower-cost autonomous rail transit system instead of MRT, targeting a 2027 start. SBDJ said it had received no formal notice, while separate ART planning continued, leaving the subway proposal's status unresolved.
